Reel handled this 185# blue fin like a champ. It was on the deck in under 15 minutes. Low gear is awesome. It’s easy to change in and out when this thing ran towards the boat. Metal body was able to handle the 30# drag. I could barely hold it after five minutes. I resulted to using the rail. I dropped back into gear and horsed it up. 40n and the 60 are virtually the same reel just one has more capacity. Noo need to use more the 80lb braid on the 40 and 100-130 on the 60. 500yds for 80# on the 40n and 700 yds of 100# braid. Both have max drag of 38#.

This has to be the best purchase I’ve made in a while since my purchase of my Shimano Baitrunner reel. I was looking for a lever drag reel that was left hand retrieve, I have an older Penn 330Gti and a grouper I caught recently actually was peeling line off of that reel with the drag cranked all the way down. But I couldn’t really find a good lever drag reel that I was happy with as I prefer LH retrieves, then a buddy on the Tampa Bay Fishing Club recommended this beauty to me. So glad I took his advice, the day I received it, I removed my Penn Rival 20 from its Rival 7’ rod and put this reel on it. Put some mono backing and 65 lb Power Pro braid on, went out and tested it. Love the casting and reeling with it, I wish they had level wind but oh well I’ll get adjusted to it quickly. Now I just need to break that new reel curse and catch something on it.This reel is very smooth reeling, love the 2 speeds of it and how well it fits on my rod.I did use the back mounting plate from my Penn Rival instead of the included one, only because the one from the Rival has a hook holder built into it.Be sure that if you purchase this reel, that you 1. Know how to cast a bait caster style reel, but keep in mind these spools are much larger and spin more freely. 2. Be prepared for backlash/birds nests. 3. You know that these do not have levelwind and you have to guide the line manually to spool it level.

First time fishing with this reel. Fishing for Blue Fin Tuna up to 150 lbs. Really a bit under gunned with this reel but easily slayed a 70 lb Blue Fin that was really hot. The fish made at least four strong runs but the drag was smooth and consistent for the entire battle. Nice that I can use it for this class of fish but should be equally at home pulling in large Ling Cod and Halibut.

This is a very nice real. It is everything I need. I have the 40n and when reeling in fish from 200′ + water, I am glad I have this reel. I watch everyone else struggle with the big ARS. With this reel, I steady crank them up without wearing myself out. If you are in the market for a great reel that is better than the price indicates, you should get this. I have 85# braid with a 50# mono topshot currently. I carefully rinse my reels off and this thing is still looking and working like new.

The Fathom 2 speed narrow spool line of Penn reels are really awesome. They are very powerful and I use them bottom fishing at least 20x or so a year. The low speed gives you incredible torque when winding up something heavy, and the high speed is good for retrieving and replacing baits, etc. I’ve had a couple of these in various sizes for 3 or 4 years now and they’ve performed flawlessly.

I really love this reel, the two speed and lever drag combined make things extremely easy to fight a big fish. Just took it out and caught a 48 lb. Bluefin (+ many Yellowfin in the 20 lb. class) The two speed allows you to get a slight break while reeling in a big fish by changing the gear ratio. You don’t make as much progress, but it can give you a few minutes of ease, then drop it back down and continue the fight. (not sure if that is it’s intended purpose or not). Also I really like the lever drag, this makes things really easy, you can always have the drag slightly engaged or increase it on the fly with a simple touch. It also happens to be one of the easiest level-wind reels I have ever used to cast. I can easily cast 20-30 feet with a small anchovy and heavy line (with a little practice). The reel is also extremely lightweight, and compact, but extremely durable. Lot’s of room for plenty line too. I love it, and am glad I purchased it. Ill probably get another one (or maybe a couple more in different sizes).

I’m fishing 20 lb line on the 15 size reel with spectra backing and it’s awesome. 2-speed might be overkill for that line class, but for the price and quality… why not!?!? I also have 25, 30, and 40 size reels and they are all great! Killed a lot of yellowfin and bluefin tunas with these. All the engineering of the Penn Torque reels at half the price.

To get a left-handed reel, I usually buy Avets. For less than 1/2 the price the Penn Fathom 30 (FTH30LD2LH) is a great value. You can adjust the drag similar to other lever drag reels. Max drag rating, Strike=23 lbs, Full=28 lbs, Sunset=33 lbs. It’s a 2-speed reel where you change gears by either pushing or twisting gear set button. Gear ratios are 5.5:1/2.5:1. Bearings for spool are very smooth; good for fly-lining. Similar in size to an Avet MXL Raptor, the main difference is the Avet body is stronger since Avets are machined from an aluminum block. Overall the Penn Fathom is a very nice reel at a lower cost. Wish they made the left-handed Penn Fathom reels in other larger models.

Since I started sea fishing I have been buying reels, many reels (fixed and multiplier) to try and find something that was reliable and performed as I expected. I started out cheap (£20), worked my way up to £100+ (still wasn’t getting it) , then borrowed a mates old Penn reel. I liked it so I bought this fathom15 to try, then I bought another, then my mate bought 3 more… It does what it’s suposed to, load it up with some quality power pro line and you’ll never look back.

A great reel for serious fish. The two speeds are good for applying extra pressure on the fish. The drag is smooth. A recommended reel
