Makaira Two Speeds design, drive, drag and durability’ big game fisheries for billfish, large tuna and sharks will expose weakness in any one of these component systems with disastrous results.

Embracing and addressing these four cornerstones, Okuma’s multi-national design team, in cooperation with Tiburon Engineering, set out to reinvent the offshore reel.

The two-speed Makaira series is the result. Advanced, unique and with numerous patents to its’ credit, Makaira provides uncompromised excellence within every aspect of its’ design, construction and performance. With sizes to meet the demands of big game fishing worldwide, the Okuma Makaira series sets a standard that will advance the ability and redefine the expectations of tournament crews, long-range anglers and private boaters.

Mounted in the top of the spool and protected by the Hydro Block system is a multi-disc felt drag system that works in conjunction with a secondary drag system that is mounted under the spool.

Even pressure is applied to both surfaces of the spool for maximum stability

I’ve been an Avet man my whole life and to tell you the truth I still am. With that being said, the 50SEa gave them a good run for their money. It’s ridiculously smooth and lightweight. Hard to believe that it has 85lbs of drag. Nice high gear speed and a great winch for the low gear. I absolutely love everything about this reel. Before, all I used were Avet’s. Now, it’s Avet’s and Makaira’s. If you’re hesitating at all on buying it, just stop and go ahead and make the purchase. Get the Mak and go out there and catch some fish!

Man this thing spins for a conventional lever drag. I have it spooled with 300yd of 65lb braid and around 50 yards of 50lb mono set the drag to 15 at strike roughly 20lb at full and still no resistance to crank.

Actually Built to function at advertised Max Drag! This is my second one, and so far the only small reel I can find that works correctly at the upper end of the manufacturers drag claims. No side loading and will winch a grouper in like no other reel I own.

Silky smooth gearing and drags.. These smaller reels act more like a 50w if you use braid backing and a top shot of 100-200 yards of mono. Great for stand up fishing. In addition to the normal high speed gear, the mk-30iisea also has a lower low gear ratio than most at 1:3:1 which comes in handy when you need it. Great reel…my only concern is being able to get parts as easy as penn products which I also own. But I fish the makaira’s over them always..

Have the mak 30 sea open top and we caught a 553lb thresher shark with that reel! It worked flawlessly with 40lbs of drag on that fish for over an hour. Awesome reel!!!!

This is a solid reel. It will hold a lot of 80-100# test Braid. You should find it a match to most big game off shore species. I like the unique finish. The machining is smooth as is everything about this reel. I have a 10 day off shore trip out of San Diego on my Bucket List and this is the reel I will be taking. It has travelled to the Caribbean with a 2 week offshore workout.
