Hi – my name is Mel and I’m addicted to coffee. Seriously, it’s embarrassing how many coffee machines I’ve owned over the past decade trying to find a machine that works for me. Everything from the areopress (not a consistent cup of coffee- blame the operator, not the device); Moka pot (very good, except when I wanted a latte, which was often); Nespresso with milk frother (didn’t love the pain of ordering pods and the milk frother didn’t last); Illy Caffe & Espresso (very good while it lasted, which was a while, but I am not a morning person, so frothing the milk was an extra step that I didn’t love so I often ended up skipping altogether); Mr. Coffee Barista Premium and, of course, multiple Keurigs for work and home. Even with these machines, I’d be tempted to sneak out to the local coffee shop/Starbucks for lattes, so waay too much of my budget was going to supporting my addiction. With the Jura E8, I can say that I’ve finally found the perfect machine for me.I settled on buying a Jura after being served a fantastic cup of coffee at my friend’s house. She raved about their machine, noting her previous Jura (which they ended up donating to a family member) was still kicking over a decade after they purchased it. I went home that night, started saving my pennies, and watching for sales. After reviewing a Sur la Table chart comparing different models of Juras (attached), I settled on this model, which had the features that were important to me – variety of drinks, ease of cleaning the milk system, ease of operation, clear display, and bean and water capacity. My hope is that my machine lasts me as long as my friend’s, and that I’ll be raving about this coffee maker for years to come. Here are my early observations:Pros:Ease of Use & Quality of Drink: Espresso? Coffee? Cappuccino? Flat white? Yes please. Can you press a button? If so, you can make a fantastic drink. And it is fast. This is (by far) the best quality drinks I have ever made. I will gladly turn down coffee at Starbucks or my local coffee place to drink coffee and espresso drinks at home.Note: I did extensive research before purchasing this machine and know that coffee purists prefer a semi-automatic, because it gives them more control over the final product. As much as I love the idea of perfecting the coffee craft, I have a love affair with my snooze button. Too much time or effort into making a cup translates into me bypassing my machine to go straight to Starbucks.Smell: Freshly ground beans and my house smells like a coffee shop.Coffee studies: When it comes to coffee, more is more. At least when it comes to recent studies, which link coffee consumption to decreased risk of Parkinson’s disease and certain cancers. So really, I’m just investing in my health.Cons:Maintenance: The machine is easy to clean, but does require daily/regular maintenance.Morning: Machine rinses the coffee system once it turns on. If you make a milk-based drink, you need to push a button to run hot water through the milk system.Night: If you’ve made a milk-based drink, you need to run Jura concentrate through the milk system. Empty and clean drip tray and coffee grounds container. Wipe down the machine.Periodic: Clean water tank with a brush. Replace filter or run descaling tablets through machine. Use cleansing tablet to clean machine. Wipe down bean hopper.Hidden Costs: You need to conduct regular maintenance to keep the machine running. But it can be pricy, given you need to use Jura specialty products. Milk cleanser (daily, whenever you make a milk-based drink); filter or descaling tablets; and cleansing tablets. Jura recommends changing out the milk pipe and interchangable milk spout every three months “in the interest of hygiene.” Not cheap, but a necessary expense to keep my new toy running.Consistency? One of the pluses of the machine is that you can adjust the strength and volume while brewing. Mostly great, but my husband notes that increasing the default 5 oz. of coffee to 8 oz. results in a weaker cup of coffee, even if the strength of the coffee is set at the same level. Not sure yet if this is operator error – we changed the default grinder setting, which has helped. But my husband’s new default is to brew two 5 oz. drinks back-to-back, rather than one 8 oz. drink. (Note: the machine can brew two cups of coffee at a time but it is, to quote my husband, “just as easy” to brew two cups back-to back.)Too much coffee?: Because it is so easy to make coffee and espresso drinks, I end up drinking waay too much. Not sure that it is fair to complain about this . . .So, that’s it. I’ll post updates once I’ve had the machine longer.
Never thought I would spend this kind of money on a coffee machine but it has made a connoisseur out of me. If you are into espresso, cappuccino, lattes or just plain good coffee you’d be hard-pressed to find a better product. I recommend Lavazza Super Crema for your bean and organic whole milk. We have since stopped ordering coffee when we go out to eat. We now get our dessert to go and can’t wait to get home to some real Java. A good cappuccino is $5 in my neighborhood, so it will take some time but it will pay for itself eventually. Maintaining cleanliness of our previous coffee machines was a chore and only partially effective. I sleep well knowing it’s very hygienic, quick and easy to clean, rinses itself automatically and reminds you when it’s time for thourough cleaning. I give it a big five stars.
Amazon Customer –
While we loved the coffee the machine was high maintenance and completely failed in 5 months in a two person household. Called Jura and after waiting 1/2 hour on hold was put to voice mail which has not been returned after 3 days. Jura also ignored my contact attempts via their web site.Ok, update, finally got through to tech support (hint, use the (201) number) and the nice lady walked me through the solution in 5 minutes and we now have Jura coffee again!
